Youth Flag Football Uniform Guide, What Leagues Actually Require

Youth flag football is the fastest growing team sport in the country, and most new programs order their first kit without knowing the rules that get garments rejected. These are the ones that matter.

The three rules that fail garments

1. No pockets. Shorts and jerseys must have no pockets at all, a finger caught in a pocket during a flag pull is the injury the rule exists to prevent.
2. No exposed drawstrings. Internal elastic or an internal drawstring only.
3. The jersey must not cover the flag belt. Either a shorter cut, or a jersey that is tucked in as a league requirement.

Ordering a standard tackle football jersey for a flag league usually fails on point three.

What a youth flag kit includes

• Jersey, 150–170 GSM micro mesh, suitable for flag football length, back number required.
• Shorts, belt loop compatible, no pockets, quick drying.
• Flag belt, check whether your league supplies these or expects teams to.
• Optional: soft shell helmet (required in some leagues), mouth guard, socks.

Sizing 6U to 14U

Youth sizing varies wildly between suppliers, so never order from a size name alone, order from a measurement chart.

• 6U–8U, youth XS to S. Children this age grow during the season. Order slightly long in the body, not wide.
• 10U–12U, youth M to L. The widest size spread on a single roster. Expect to order across four sizes.
• 14U, youth L to adult S. Some players will need adult sizes.

Always order spares in the middle sizes. Rosters change and a incorrectly sized player cannot play in someone else's jersey in a numbered set.

Budget

A flag jersey and pocketless shorts start at $62 per player before quantity discounts ($36 + $26). Orders of 11–20 receive 5% off, 21–50 receive 10% off and 51+ receive 15% off. The minimum is 10 units per design.

Timeline

Delivery takes 14 to 21 days including shipping, from artwork approval to your doorstep. Fall leagues should order by early July. Spring leagues by early January. Add two weeks if you need sizing samples first.
