Flag Football Helmets, Soft Shell Headgear Buyer's Guide

Compare soft shell flag football helmets, padded headbands, and 7-on-7 headgear. Safety, league rules, and how to choose the right fit for youth and adult flag football.

Flag football is noncontact in name only. Players still bump heads on diving catches, run into goalposts, and collide chasing the same flag. That's why flag football helmets, soft shell headgear designed for low-impact play, have become a fixture on 7-on-7 rosters across the country.

This guide breaks down what to look for in a soft shell flag football helmet, how it compares to a padded headband, and what most youth and 7v7 leagues actually require.

What is a soft shell flag football helmet?

A soft shell helmet (sometimes called a "soft shell" or "rugby-style" helmet) is a fully foam-padded headpiece, no hard plastic shell, no facemask. The outer layer is a stretch fabric over multiple density foam, and the chin strap is a soft snap closure. It's built specifically for sports where collisions happen but full pads are overkill: flag football, 7-on-7, rugby, lacrosse practice, and youth contact drills.

Our Flag Football Soft Helmet is a lightweight 7-on-7 design weighing under 8 oz, with vented foam panels and a moisture wicking inner liner so it doesn't turn into a sweat bucket by halftime.

Soft shell helmet vs. Padded headband, what's the difference?

If your league sees regular head-to-head contact (it happens on every diving catch), a full soft shell is worth the extra weight. If you're playing adult co-ed flag once a week, a padded headband is usually enough.

Do flag football leagues require helmets?

It depends on the league and age group. The short version:

    • NFL Flag, Headgear is optional at all age levels but encouraged for ages 5–10. Soft shell only, no hard shells.
    • USA Football 7-on-7, Soft shell helmets are allowed and recommended for ages 12 and under. Required in some regional divisions.
    • Most youth rec leagues (ages 5–10), Increasingly requiring soft shell helmets after concussion-policy updates in 2023–2024.
    • High school 7-on-7, Optional in most state associations. A handful (TX, FL, GA) have mandated soft shell during summer 7v7 contact.
    • Adult flag leagues, Almost always optional.

Always check your specific league's current rulebook, concussion policies have tightened nearly every year since 2020, and what was optional last season may be required this one.

What to look for when buying

    1. Certification. Look for headgear that meets N.O.C.S.A.E. ND200 (rugby-style) or ASTM F1493 standards. These aren't football helmet certifications, they're the right standard for soft shell impact attenuation.
    2. Multi-density foam. A soft outer foam absorbs glancing blows. A denser inner foam handles direct impact. Single-density foam compresses faster and recovers slower.
    3. Venting. Cross-flow vents in the crown panel cut interior temperature by 6–10°F on a hot day. Make sure the helmet has at least 6–8 visible vent channels.
    4. Adjustable chin strap. A snap closure is faster on the sideline. Hook-and-loop straps loosen during play and need to be re-cinched every series.
    5. Washable liner. Removable, machine-washable inner liners are a quality-of-life feature you'll appreciate by Week 3.
    6. Color matching. If you're outfitting a full roster, pick a helmet that comes in your team's primary color, or one neutral enough (black, white, navy) to disappear under your custom jerseys.

    Fit guide, measuring head circumference

Wrap a soft tape measure around the widest part of the head, just above the ears and across the middle of the forehead. Match to the chart:

    SizeHead Circumference
    Youth S/M20.5" – 21.5"
    Youth L / Adult S21.5" – 22.5"
    Adult M22.5" – 23.5"
    Adult L23.5" – 24.5"
    Adult XL24.5" – 25.5"

A correctly fitted soft shell sits level on the head with the front edge two finger-widths above the eyebrows, and the chin strap snug but not tight (you should fit a finger underneath comfortably).

Pair it with the rest of your kit

A helmet is one piece of a flag football kit. Most teams that order soft shell helmets also pick up matching:

    Final word

A soft shell flag football helmet is one of the cheapest concussion-mitigation upgrades a youth or 7-on-7 program can make. It won't prevent every injury, but it dramatically reduces the everyday bumps and bangs that add up over a season, and at $35–$70 per player, it's a fraction of the cost of a single ER visit.
