Youth Jersey Size Chart: Youth XL vs Adult Small
Find youth jersey chest and length measurements in inches. Compare Youth XL with Adult Small for football, basketball and baseball using official Midfield charts.
Find your player's jersey size using the official Midfield garment measurements below. Compare chest and length in inches for youth football, basketball and baseball jerseys, then check Youth XL against Adult Small for the same jersey style. Measure a jersey that already fits rather than choosing by age or a size label alone.
Quick answer: Youth XL is not automatically the same as Adult Small. In Midfield's football chart, Adult Small is 1 inch wider and 1 inch longer. In the full button baseball chart, it is 2 inches wider and 2 inches longer. But in our basketball and round neck baseball chart, Men's Small has a smaller chest measurement and is half an inch shorter than Youth XL. Choose by the exact garment chart, not the size label.

Youth jersey size chart
These numbers come straight from our official size guide. They are garment measurements in inches, taken from the finished jersey, so compare them with a jersey that already fits your player well. Charts differ by product, so use the one that matches your jersey.

Youth XL vs Adult Small, the question everyone asks
The difference depends on the jersey. These comparisons use the same official charts as the tables above.
| Jersey style | Youth XL chest / length | Adult or Men's Small chest / length | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Football, flat chest width | 17.5 / 29 | 18.5 / 30 | Adult S is 1 inch wider and longer |
| Basketball or men's round neck baseball, chest measurement | 40 / 27.5 | 37 / 27 | Men's S chest is 3 inches smaller, length is 0.5 inch shorter |
| Full button or two button baseball, flat chest width | 17.5 / 25.5 | 19.5 / 27.5 | Adult S is 2 inches wider and longer |
Do not compare a flat chest width directly with a chest measurement around the garment. Follow the measurement labels for your chosen product. A larger size label does not guarantee a larger jersey across different cuts.
What "youth medium" actually means
On our charts, a Youth Medium football jersey is 15.5 inches across the chest and 27 inches long, and a Youth Medium basketball jersey is 34 inches around the chest and 23.5 inches long. Sizing is not standardized across brands, so always check our chart instead of a size the athlete wore from another brand.
For charts marked chest width, lay a jersey that fits well flat and measure across the front from armpit to armpit. For a chart using chest circumference, double that flat measurement before comparing. Measure length from the top of the shoulder to the bottom hem. Keep inches and measurement types consistent, and compare with the chart for the same jersey style.
Adjustments for each sport
Football. Compare with a football jersey that fits over the player's actual shoulder pads. Do not assume every player needs the same number of sizes up. Ask us to check the selected product if pad clearance is uncertain.
Basketball. Check both chest and length against a jersey the player can move comfortably in. The chart above is the youth and men's basketball chart, not a universal chart for every basketball cut.
Baseball and softball. Match round neck, full button or two button construction before choosing a size. Fastpitch and slowpitch are softball formats, not baseball sizing categories. Use the specific product chart for either format, and size pants separately from jerseys.
Flag football and 7v7. Use the flag football chart on your selected product rather than the padded football table above. Check your league's fit and uniform requirements before ordering.
How to size a full roster without reorders
- Send a sizing form, not a group text. Ask parents to measure a jersey that fits well and compare it with our chart, not "what size does he wear?"
- Record the jersey style. Keep the product and chart name alongside each player's size so youth and adult cuts are not mixed up.
- Check uncertain measurements. If a player falls between rows, send us their garment measurements and selected product before ordering.
- Check the intended fit. Allow for equipment and movement using a jersey that already fits in playing conditions, not an assumed age or growth allowance.
- Review the roster before approval. Confirm each name, number and size before production begins.
Common sizing mistakes
- Using a T shirt size for a fitted compression garment
- Sizing a full button baseball jersey by street size instead of chest
- Ordering adult only sizing for a mixed youth/teen roster
- Forgetting that pants and jerseys size differently, waist vs chest
